I have a question. Can you opt out of distributing to Spotify for political reasons? A million streams equating to £3000. Heck, if I got a million streams I’d expect a £million lol
This is encouraging to hear, thanks for letting me know. Of course, Spotify isn’t the only streaming culprit but is the worst of a bad bunch. £1 per stream would be life changing on individual levels for artists and their teams and the culture as a whole. A better future is possible :-)
Thank you for writing this! After trying CD Baby, Ditto and Distrokid, and having a terrible experience of late with the last one of that list who removed an entire album for 'artificial streams' I never participated in acquiring (streams spotify for artists said were from their algorithmic playlists), I have really bad feelings about the future using these platforms that are kind of 'free for alls'. If you were to list the best invite-only, curated distributors that are not owned by major labels and have a good reputation, which would you recommend?
Once again Phil, a comprehensive and informative post.
I do not believe that at present there is a better online resource for artist-related business knowledge.
I read online resources constantly and widely. It is rare to find such transparent and honest and genuinely knowledgeable information which is free of self-promotion and third party links. For that alone my subscription is worth every penny.
I regularly send links to those musicians, artists and bands I work with and exhort them to read and absorb.
👏
PS I think your copy editing eyes were getting tired towards the end 🫣

You can opt out of Spotify for any reason at most distributors as far as I know. Curated platforms like AWAL that work on a percentage might insist.
£1m for 1m streams would be lovely!

Thanks for another excellent post Phil.
I have shared the post with a number of artists and always recommend The Team Around You :)
Keep up the amazing work
